You had me at Sari Wedding Dress

Several months ago I had the pleasure of working with one of the most delightful and creative brides I have had.  As with every consultaion, I asked Amelia what her wedding dress would look like and she began to giggle.  I must admit I got a little nervous...  She followed up her sweet giggle with "well, it's made from purple sari matterial".

I quickly realized that this was going to be a fun one.

The warmer days

As much as I love Houston's seasons... when it is cold outside, like today, I really wish it was much warmer.  In my attempts to catch up with the whirlwind of life I started to look through old photographs from the summer, maybe to catch up or maybe to remember the warmer days.

This past summerIn my efforts to support Texas farmers that include fresh cut flowers in their repetua of goods sold, I visited a central texas farm known as Texas Specialty Cut Flowers aka Blue Barn. Twenty minutes West of Wimberly in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, the Blue Barn is situated off FM 2325 in a very remote location.

It is important to mention that Texas had just delt with one of the worst droughts in recorded history this past summer.  And this is when I thought it would be a good idea to visit the farm.  I even thought it would be a good idea to drag my family with me.

Here is what I recorded from the trip:

La Difference

I'm kinda excited to write this blog today,  it's about a little something that affects me on a daily bases.  Not too big of a deal, but definitely worth a mention.

The difference between a florist and a floral designer.... it is worth describing.  I think I am interested in noting the difference because in my case I made the decision in my career to become one while leaving the other.

Florist
are people who work with flowers and plants, generally at the retail level.

Floral Designer
one who engages in floral design or floral arts as the art of creating flower arrangements in vases, bowls, baskets or other containers, or making bouquets and compositions from cut flowers, foliage, herbs, ornamental grasses and other plant materials.

I do not think you necessarily have to do this, but it was a choice I made for one simple reason... I did not want to do retail.  I wanted to make sure that I was not bogged down by some business aspects that were not enjoyable.  Large rent, candles, chocolate, balloons, stuffed animals and most importantly wire services.  Not that any of that is a problem... just not my thing.  And yes, we all know there are exceptions to the rule, thank god!

After 2 years in the business I noticed my deep passion for floral design and to be able to build that there had to be a distinction in my future path.  A fork in the road.  Am I going to open a shop where I have to spend my Valentine's day/Christmas/Mother's day/ Thanksgiving.... with my amazing customers or with my amazing family.   It was a hard choice, as a florist for 5 years I began to love my customers and look forward to spending those precious moments with them.  But I felt more creative, more passionate about floral designing and the quality of work that I gave my customers than the business aspects of the retail shop.

So I became a floral designer.

Dancing Dahlias

It's Dahlia season! Okay, it's been in season for several weeks now, but I am just starting to realize how much I love the Dahlia.  After reading up on these beauties I have found the following fun facts:
  • Dahlia's are the national flower of Mexico
  • They range in height, from 12in to 8ft and the flower heads can come as large as 1 foot in diameter, about the size of a dinner plate
  • It is said that ancient Aztecs used dahlia flowers to treat epilepsy.
  • There are over 270,000 species of Dahlias.
The Dahlia's blooming season falls between early spring and early fall, so hurry up and enjoy some of the Dahlias, they won't be here for too much longer.  And quite honestly, the reason I was inspired to write this today was due to the amazing Dahlias that are currently available, they have been the best of the season!

Here is a special arrangement that was made yesterday for a favorite customer.  I am currently trying to convince him to send flowers before he has to apologize....

....sometimes called le Studio

Let me start by showing you a relevant image, this image is of the view I have when sitting at my desk in my office.  I love it!

But not everyone I have interacted with, in the first year of owning my own business, has had positive things to say about this view.  Some have not taken me seriously and have not found interest in my work or even given me a moment to introduce myself! Yes it has happened.  All because this awesome view.  Okay it admittedly does not look this amazing all the time... some times the shades are forced closed due to 105 degree temperatures.  I feel wrong cranking the AC just to have a great view.  My favorite view, the sunny, stormy days when the palm trees look like they are dancing in the rain.

What I am talking about is the shunning I have received by some in the local community about.... duh.nt..don... don.....are you ready for it.... Yes it's true, I work from home! My lovely sweet little casa, my place of joy, comfort and productivity.  With my two favorite souls, my fur ball, Chase and my loving musician/lawyer boyfriend Mark.  It's sounds too prefect to be wrong!

So today I read the most relevant article on this subject, we will call... pajama millionaires.

Go take a read and tell me you can't fall in love with your own local pajama millionaire! Continue supporting your local florist, as we support each other we grow with each other!!

Floral Fashion: The Bright Side

Who can't just smile a when looking at such bright beautiful fashion trends.  2011 Summer has brought new color combinations that are much bolder and daring as in previous years.  Orange has made its way back and combining it with contrasting colors, such as turquoise, makes it just rock a little bit harder.  And then if you dare, a pair of yellow flats to complete the look.
